A Review of Camtasia Studio
Camtasia Studio is software created by Techsmith (the creators of Snagit and Jing) that allows you to create, edit and produce your own videos. This video software can be used in a number of different ways and in my opinion is a steal at only $300 (which can be downloaded directly from the Techsmith website). I have seen a number of people use this software to cheaply create tutorials for their interactive websites or videos for podcasts.
To create videos:
In creating a video you have two options. You can either create the video by recording it using the Camtasia software or use existing video/audio/images you have to splice together your own video production. They have a few convenient applications to help assist you in your production including:
• Easy editing capabilities
• Video zooming and arrows (if you want to emphasize something on your screen)
• Captioning
• Audio enhancements (raise/lower volume or automatically remove noise)
• Video Transitions
• Picture in Picture
• And many more
Once you have created your video Camtasia allows you to select what format you want to render the video file into. There are numerous options including FLV, MP4, MOV, WMV, M4V, etc.
The main drawbacks I have seen with Camtasia are their issues with outside videos being editing within their software application. First hand, I have seen major issues with editing and producing a Camtasia video with WMV files. Additionally, if you have a large video file with lots of edits, there can be some lag time in the editing process. Most of these issues can be worked around with a few extra steps.
All-in-all, the software is relatively easy to use and teach yourself using Techsmith’s library of video tutorials. The best part of Camtasia Studio is you can try the software free for 30 days before you purchase. I wish all programs were set-up like this! Hint Hint to all programmers out there!
