Using Google Site to Create Your Own Website

Looking to have your own website, but aren’t an expert in the web? There is a solution out there that is both easy and FREE. Google has created their own web site platform (Google Site) where anyone can easily create, brand, and share their own website with the world.

Among its many attributes, Google site works seamlessly with all the other services offered by Google (Gmail, Google Calendars, videos, talk, Picasa) and even with some services outside Google (see the hundreds of available gadgets). You can even designate owners or collaborators and have many people involved in the maintenance of the site. And if you are an expert in the web? You can easily manipulate the HTML/CSS code to personalize it further.

Recently, I created a website for my CBU CMBA group. Currently the University didn’t have a medium for all the MBA students to communicate with each other and share documents, videos, and affiliate websites. I found the best solution was to create a Google site. Each of the leaders within each class can now post anything they choose and each of the students have a one-stop-shop they can visit, gather, and share information.

The main disadvantage I found was that though you can customize your URL, it will still have the sites.google.com in front of it. However, Google does allow you to redirect the site to a purchased URL once you have obtained ownership. Additionally, there are a few hiccups in functions in the site and there is a learning curve to the content management system. It took me a couple days to really get a good feel for everything Google site can do.

Google site is perfect for anyone, whether they are simple creating a family site, club site, or even a small company site.
